Pharmacological effect
Antiviral drug for external use. Penciclovir is an antiviral drug, active against Herpes simplex type 1 and type 2 viruses, Varicella zoster virus. The virus may be inactive in the body for an extended period of time. At the moment of activation (for example, due to fatigue, cold, flu), the virus begins to multiply, which leads to the development of fever in the form of bubble rashes, it is often observed on the lips or in the areas around them. Penciclovir blocks the virus and stops its reproduction. The use of the drug leads to more rapid recovery, reducing the intensity of pain, reduces the period of risk of transmission of viral infection.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, the drug is practically not subjected to systemic absorption. Modern analytical methods fail to detect penciclovir in the blood or urine of healthy volunteers after applying Fenistil pencivir cream in doses many times higher than therapeutic ones. Penciclovir penetrates into virus-infected cells rapidly into penciclovir triphosphate, which has pharmacological activity and remains in the affected cells for 12 hours.
