Pharmacological effect
Antiviral drug is a synthetic analog of thymidine nucleoside. In infected cells containing viral thymidine kinase, phosphorylation occurs and monophosphate is converted to acyclovir. Under the influence of acyclovir guanylate cyclase, monophosphate is converted to diphosphate and under the action of several cellular enzymes into triphosphate. The high selectivity of action and low toxicity for humans are due to the lack of the necessary enzyme for the formation of acyclovir triphosphate in intact cells of the macroorganism. Aciclovir triphosphate, which is inserted into the virus synthesized by the virus, blocks the reproduction of the virus. The specificity and very high selectivity of Zovirax is also due to its predominant accumulation in cells affected by the herpes virus. Highly active against Herpes simplex type 1 and type 2 virus; varicella-zoster virus (Varicella zoster); Epstein-Barr virus (types of viruses are listed in ascending order of the magnitude of the IPC Zovirax). Moderately active against CMV. In case of herpes, Zovirax reception prevents the formation of new elements of rash, reduces the likelihood of skin dissemination and visceral complications, accelerates the formation of crusts, reduces pain in the acute phase of herpes zoster. The treatment with Zovirax has an immunostimulating effect.
Pharmacokinetics
In vitro and in vivo inhibits replication of human herpes viruses, including herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, varicella-zoster virus and herpes zoster (VOG), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). In cell culture, acyclovir has the most pronounced antiviral activity against HSV-1, then, in decreasing order of activity, follows: HSV-2, VOG, EBV and CMV. It has low toxicity to mammalian cells.

Use during pregnancy and lactation
Adequate and strictly controlled clinical studies of the safety of the drug during pregnancy was not conducted. Use is indicated only in cases where the intended benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
Dosage and administration
The drug is recommended to be applied 5 times / day (approximately every 4 hours) with a thin layer on the affected and bordering areas of skin and mucous membranes. The duration of treatment is at least 4 days. In the absence of healing, treatment can be continued for up to 10 days. If the symptoms of the disease persist for more than 10 days, you should consult with your doctor. The cream is applied either with a cotton swab or with clean hands to avoid additional infection of the affected areas.
Side effects
Local reactions: sometimes - short-term redness, itching, peeling, burning or stinging in the application areas. Allergic reactions: rarely - allergic dermatitis (often associated with a reaction to excipients); in isolated cases - angioedema.
Overdose
There is no evidence of an overdose of Zovirax.
