Pharmacological effect
Antimicrobial, 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative. The mechanism of action is associated with selective inhibition of the synthesis of bacterial DNA. Nitroxoline is active against gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus spp. (including Staphylococcus aureus), Streptococcus spp. (including beta-hemolytic streptococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis), Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus subtilis; Gram-negative bacteria:.... Pharmacokinetics

Indications
Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract (mainly pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, epididymitis, an infected adenoma or carcinoma of the prostate gland), caused by microorganisms that are sensitive to nitroxoline. Prevention of infectious complications during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (catheterization, cystoscopy) in the postoperative period during surgical interventions on the kidneys and urinary tract.
Contraindications
Renal dysfunction, accompanied by oligo- or anuria, severe liver disease, deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, cataract, neuritis, pregnancy, lactation, hypersensitivity to quinoline preparations.

To prevent a negative effect on the nervous system, the use of a combination of Nitroxoline with nitrofurans should be avoided. The drug Nitroxoline reduces the effectiveness of nalidixic acid. The simultaneous use of antacid preparations containing magnesium slows down the absorption of Nitroxoline.
