Pharmacological effect

Nifuroxazide is a derivative of 5-nitrofuran. It has a local antibacterial effect in the intestinal lumen against Gram-positive bacteria from the genus Staphylococcus and Gram-negative bacteria from the family Enterobacteriaceae from the genus: Yersinia sp., Escherichia sp., Citobacter sp., Enterobacter sp., Klebsiella sp., Salmonella sp. Nifuroxazide does not exhibit an antibacterial effect on the bacteria of the species: Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Nifuroxazide does not destroy the saprophytic microflora of the digestive tract, does not disturb the equilibrium of the normal intestinal flora. Non-emergence of resistant strains. Does not cause the formation of resistant strains. Nifuroxazide has an inhibitory effect on the activity of dehydrogenases and the synthesis of proteins in bacterial cells. The detailed mechanism of the drug is unknown. Nifuroxazide presumably inhibits the activity of dehydrogenases and the synthesis of proteins in bacterial cells. Cross resistance to other antibacterial drugs was also not observed. The effectiveness of nifuroxazide does not depend on the pH that exists in the intestinal lumen, nor on the sensitivity of microorganisms to antibacterial drugs. The drug is practically not absorbed from the digestive tract, acts exclusively in the intestinal lumen.

Pharmacokinetics

Nifuroxazide is hardly soluble. After oral administration, it is practically not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and does not have a systemic effect. Excreted through the intestines.

Indications

Acute and chronic diarrhea of bacterial origin; acute food toxicoinfection.

Contraindications

Increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug, including other derivatives of 5-nitrofuran; fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome, sucrose-isomaltose deficiency; children's age up to 7 years.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

As a precautionary measure, it is preferable not to use Stopdiar during pregnancy, as there is not enough clinical data to evaluate the teratogenic or fetotoxic effects of nifuroxazide when it is used during pregnancy. With short-term use of the drug, breastfeeding is possible.

Dosage and administration

Stopdiar is recommended to take inside. The drug is prescribed to adults and children over 7 years, 200 mg (2 pills) 4 times / day. The drug is taken regardless of the meal at regular intervals (every 6 hours). The course of treatment in prescribed doses is not more than 3 days. During the treatment of acute diarrhea with a drug, it is imperative that a permanent oral or intravenous replenishment of fluid deficiency in the body is required, depending on the patient’s general condition. If after this period the symptoms do not disappear, the patient should consult a doctor. The tablet should be swallowed whole, not chewed, not crushed, with a suitable amount of water.

Side effects

Nifuroxazide was well tolerated, Side effects were practically not observed. In the presence of increased individual sensitivity to nifuroxazide in isolated cases, the following side reactions are possible. On the part of the digestive system: abdominal pain, nausea, increased diarrhea. From the hemopoietic system: granulocytopenia. From the skin and subcutaneous fat: skin rash (including pustular), nodular pruritus. Allergic reactions: shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, skin rash, itching.

Overdose

Symptoms: increased side effects. Treatment: gastric lavage, symptomatic therapy.

Interaction with other drugs

Drinking alcohol during treatment with Stopdiar can cause disulfiram-like reactions. In the course of drug treatment, it is not possible to take other oral medications at the same time due to the strong absorption properties of the drug. Since the drug Stopdiar is practically not absorbed and does not enter the systemic circulation, its drug interaction with drugs for systemic use is unlikely and is not known to date.

special instructions

STOPDIAR drug is not recommended to take longer than 7 days.In the case of continuing diarrhea after 3 days of treatment, in-depth diagnosis is needed to determine the causes of the symptoms and discuss the issue of antibiotic therapy. In the case of severe invasive diarrhea, an antibiotic should be given, as STOPDIAR is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. In the event of a hypersensitivity reaction (shortness of breath, skin rash, itching), you should stop taking the drug. In connection with the pronounced adsorbing properties of the drug, simultaneous oral intake of other drugs should be avoided. During treatment with the drug Stopdiar is contraindicated the use of alcoholic beverages, because alcohol increases the body's sensitivity to the drug and can provoke a disulfiram-like reaction, manifested by exacerbation of diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, skin flushing, sensation of heat in the face and upper torso, noise in the head, difficulty breathing, tachycardia, fear. If during the period of drug treatment symptoms of dehydration appear, rehydration therapy should be carried out (about 2 liters of fluid per day) in accordance with the clinical condition of the patient. In the case of allergic reactions should stop using the drug. When treating diarrhea while using the drug Stopdiar should follow a strict diet, excluding juices, raw vegetables and fruits, spicy and difficult to digest food. During treatment, it is necessary orally or parenterally (depending on the condition of the patient) to compensate for the loss of fluid.
